Fortian Friday: The Burning Rain of Massachusetts (1857)

This one comes from a tiny note Fort found buried in an old New England paper — the kind of report scientists pretended not to see.
In 1857, residents of a Massachusetts village claimed that during a brief afternoon shower, the raindrops that fell on their skin felt hot — almost burning. Not warm. Not “sun-heated.”Burning.
Clothes were left steaming.Wooden fences hissed as droplets hit them. One woman said the rain left tiny scorch-marks on her apron.
Weather officials had no explanation. Some suggested volcanic dust (none was present), while others muttered about “chemical clouds,” which Fort adored mocking. He filed it under his quiet favorite category:
“Things behaving improperly.”

Acid rain…maybe??
